Volunteer & Make a Real Difference in 2019

Through our 24/7 crisis hotlines and live chat, Long Island Crisis Center provides short-term crisis counseling, information, and referrals on a wide range of issues, including depression, suicide, self injury, eating disorders, and more.

Long Island Crisis Center volunteers are the heart of the agency – they provide the service to our clients. All you need to start is the desire to help and time to give.  You do not need any previous experience. LICC provides a free, comprehensive training program to all volunteers.

Here’s How It Works:

Schedule your volunteer interview by calling (516) 826-0244 today.  Your interview will take place during the month of January at our Bellmore office.

If accepted, you will attend our three Counselor Assistant (CA) training class sessions during the month of February.  Counselor assistants answer the business phone and help counselors in a variety of ways.  (All LICC volunteers begin as Counselor Assistants.)

Classes take place on the following Thursday evenings at our Bellmore office:

  • February 5th: 7pm – 10pm
  • February 12th: 7pm – 10pm
  • February 19th: 7pm – 10pm

Space permitting, you will be able to sign up for our Counselor Training “Marathon,” a series of  training sessions that take place on two consecutive weekends in March.

The “Marathon” takes place on these days at our Bellmore office:

  • Saturday, March 23rd: 9:30am – 5:30pm
  • Sunday, March 24th: 12:30pm – 5:30pm
  • Saturday, March 30th: 9:30am – 5:30pm
  • Sunday, March 31st: 12:30pm – 5:30pm

As a counselor in training, you will attend 15 weekly information sessions on a variety of topics (suicide, domestic violence, self injury, etc.)  These info sessions will be held on Thursday nights, from 7pm – 10pm.  These info sessions will run from April 4th to approximately June 27th.

Concurrently, trainees do shifts with experienced counselors at their own convenience. It takes approximately nine months to complete the training.
