Long Island Crisis Center has officially brought the #GivingTuesday movement right here to Long Island! So, what is #GivingTuesday? A nationwide response to the chaos and consumerism of shopping holidays like “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday,” #GivingTuesday is a day to come together as a community, give back in meaningful ways, and support the organizations that our community relies on. And, this important day is now officially on the books, following a Citation from the Town of Hempstead.
“We are thrilled to serve as ambassadors for the #GivingTuesday movement here on Long Island,” shares Long Island Crisis Center Executive Director, Linda Leonard. “We are also proud to be officially recognized by The Town of Hempstead as #GivingTuesday ambassadors, in a Citation presented by Supervisor Kate Murray.”
In honor of this recognition, and in an effort to spread the #GivingTuesday movement here on Long Island, the Crisis Center will also be hosting a first-of-its-kind Open House. “The purpose of our #GivingTuesday Open House is to show Long Islanders just how many ways they can give back during this time of year,” explains Director of Development, Fran Karliner. “Anyone – young or old – can give time as a volunteer, give support to a friend or family member in crisis, or give a charitable gift to a not for profit organization.” The Open House takes place on Tuesday, December 1, from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, and will feature a #GivingTuesday presentation, tours of the Crisis Center, on-the-spot volunteer interviews, and opportunities to meet other community-minded individuals.
Reflecting on the viral growth of the #GivingTuesday movement across the country, Fran added this: “#GivingTuesday is so special because it reminds each of us that you don’t have to be rich or famous to make a real difference to those in crisis, or those in need.
